About Dead Air - What is all this?
Dead Air streams Halloween music 24/7/365, featuring spooky tracks, novelty songs, vintage recordings, and audio clips from horror movies and pop culture. Many of these are my own creations, born from my love of audio editing and production. The station is 100% listener-supported; as long as it covers its operating expenses, I’ll keep it spinning. While a year-round audience for Halloween music is small, it is dedicated... though, most donations arrive during the spooky season.As a kid, I loved listening to Dr. Demento. Recording Halloween songs from his show was a staple of my childhood routine because it was often the only place to find them. By adulthood, I had built a substantial collection. It started with those cassette recordings of Dr. Demento, grew into store-bought compilations, and eventually expanded into a vast library gathered from the internet. By the time I launched DeadAir.co, I had nearly a thousand songs. But no one to share them with.
Dead Air began in 2012 as an October-only project. (The earliest email I found mentioning the October broadcasts is from 2014, noting it had already been running for a few years, so 2012 feels like a fair estimate for the inaugural broadcast.)
I spent nearly 40 years working in broadcast radio. On the side, I ran a regular online streaming station as a hobby. In 2012, I had the idea to tie my home Halloween decorations into a "Pirate Radio Station" theme, combining a ghost pirate ship with a haunted radio studio in my garage to broadcast Halloween music via a small neighborhood transmitter. Unfortunately, the physical setup never moved past the concept stage.
Except for the radio part. That became Dead Air.
It started that year as a literal pirate radio broadcast during Halloween week, audible only to my half of town. Later, it moved online, taking over my regular hobby stream every October. Listener numbers surged each year, only to drop off when I reverted to the normal playlist on November 1st. It was a fun routine for a few years, but core listeners eventually urged me to take it year-round. Doing so meant investing significantly more time and money into licensing and bandwidth. Running a tiny stream for a few friends is one thing; maintaining a full-time, worldwide broadcast is another.
I agreed to give it a shot. In 2016, I launched DeadAir.co with a commitment to fund it out of my own pocket for one year. If donations couldn't cover the operating costs, I planned to revert to the October-only format.
Well, we're still here.

But I'm not gathering all of it to sell or do weird stuff with.
If somebody hacked us one day? They wouldn't find any of your personal information. They'd end up with 15 versions of Monster Mash, a bunch of empty candy wrappers, and an old latex mask that smells like pumpkin guts. Have fun with that, Mr. Robot.
Frankly? I'm flattered you think I have the time for that crap.
